John Legend and Sam Smith’s duet of ‘Stand By Me’ will give you chills

The “One World: Together At Home” global benefit concert organized by Lady Gaga and the Global Citizen movement was jam-packed with mega-star performances and appearances.

It aired Saturday, April 18 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC, NBC, NBC networks, ViacomCBS Networks, The CW and iHeartMedia channels, with a digital pre-show stream available at 2 p.m. on the major social media platforms.

The event, supporting frontline healthcare workers and the World Health Organization, was billed as the largest gathering, albeit virtual, of major artists and influencers since 1985’s Live Aid. It was chock-full of celebrities and stars, performing and urging people to raise funds for the World Health Organization’s Covid-19 Solidarity Response Fund.

But one standout of the night was a duet between John Legend and Sam Smith, who joined in singing “Stand By Me” on a split-screen from their respective homes.

The 1961 hit song by Ben E. King has been covered many times but perhaps never delivered so well when sung by two people at a distance.

Its lyrics seemed fitting for a concert to support those fighting COVID-19 in the medical field and for people around the world in general: “No I won’t be afraid/ Oh, I won’t be afraid/ Just as long as you stand, stand by me.”

Legend started off the song sitting at his piano before Smith joined in, swaying as he sang. Both put their all into the performance.

MTV dubbed Legend and Smith’s duet “a truly MAGICAL collaboration.”

Legend later joined with Lady Gaga, Andrea Bocelli, Celine Dion, and pianist Lang Lang for a performance of “The Prayer,” which was first sung by Bocelli and Dion in 1998.

(Bocelli also delivered a wow-worthy moment singing “Amazing Grace” on the steps of a Milan cathedral in front of a deserted piazza on Easter morning.)

The entire “One World” event was eight hours long and included the likes of The Rolling Stones, Elton John, Taylor Swift, Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney, Lizzo, Beyonce, Oprah, Jennifer Lopez, Michelle Obama and Laura Bush.

Global Citizen posted on Twitter on April 18 that the benefit had so far raised $127.9 million for the World Health Organization and frontline healthcare workers fighting the COVID-19 pandemic.

As of April 20, there have been 2.4 million reported cases of the novel coronavirus.
