It was recently announced that Johnny Depp would star in the “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” sequel, the second of five movies in the series. Since the announcement, people have been questioning what character Depp would play. As a Harry Potter fan myself, I have been curious as to the answer to this question as well.

It seems our questions have now been answered after a recent interview between David Yates, the film’s director, and The Leaky Cauldron. Depp will take on the role of none other than Gellert Grindelwald. As fans of the book know, Grindelwald is one of the darkest, most dangerous wizards in wizard history, next to Voldemort. After stealing the Elder Wand and creating a murderous army, Grindelwald was defeated by Albus Dumbledore in a duel in 1945.

I don’t want to give too much away… But if you aren’t familiar with the “Harry Potter” books and curious to Grindelwald’s past and his connection to Dumbledore, you can read more here.

When asked why Depp was chosen to play Grindelwald, David Yates explained to The Leaky Cauldron, “Johnny Depp is a real artist. He’s created several characters who have really resonated in our popular culture. He’s a really brilliant, brilliant actor. We were excited about seeing what he would do with this guy, the character. He’s fearless; he’s imaginative; he’s ambitious.”

David Heyman, “Harry Potter” producer, jumped in to add “Grindelwald is an iconic character, so it was important to have someone who had that weight. There’s a reason why he has that weight. It’s because, you know, he’s a fine actor who makes unexpected choices.”

During the interview, they also revealed that a young Dumbledore will appear in the sequel as well! Although he has not been cast yet, we can’t wait to see who they choose for the role!

Adding Grindelwald and Dumbledore into the “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” installments is very exciting in that it brings the story full circle to the modern day Harry Potter series we all know and love!

Keep an eye out, Depp is said to have a cameo in the first “Fantastic Beats and Where to Find Them,” hitting theaters Nov. 18!
