For Kim Kardashian’s 40th birthday, Kanye West gave his wife a hologram of her late father, Robert Kardashian. And according to Kim’s mom, the gift made the entire Kardashian clan emotional.

Speaking to Andy Cohen on his Sirius XM radio show, Kris Jenner said that West debuted the hologram during a surprise screening for Kim, Kris, Kim’s sisters and her brother, Rob, while the family was on a tropical birthday trip for Kim.

“It started and we all just started to cry. It was so intense,” said Jenner. “I must have watched it 20 times. It was just really good.”

Here’s the audio clip, posted to Radio Andy on YouTube, of Jenner talking to Cohen on air.

Jenner said that West is “the king of gifts” and told Cohen that some of the other guests on Kim’s 40th birthday trip later watched the hologram as well. She was so overcome by emotion at seeing the realistic depiction of her late ex-husband that she went to her room to “digest” it all.

Kim Kardashian later publicly shared the hologram of her father, who died at age 59 in 2003 shortly after being diagnosed with esophageal cancer.

“For my birthday, Kanye got me the most thoughtful gift of a lifetime. A special surprise from heaven. A hologram of my dad,” Kim tweeted Oct. 29. “It is so lifelike! We watched it over and over, filled with emotion.”

Khloe Kardashian commented on Kim’s Instagram post of the hologram, saying, “The most special gift EVER!! We ALL appreciated this so so much!!! Such a moving and emotional moment,” and her brother Rob responded with heart and crying emojis.

In the 2-minute hologram message, Robert Kardashian talks directly to his daughter, telling her how proud he is of her and discussing some shared memories including a favorite song, Barry Mann’s “Who Put the Bomp.”

“I can’t even describe what this meant to me and my sisters, my brother, my mom and closest friends to experience together,” she added in a second tweet. “Thank you so much Kanye for this memory that will last a lifetime.”

Hologram company Kaleida claims it produced the hologram gift of the late Kardashian patriarch. To make recordings like these, it uses existing video and audio recordings, visual effects, sound synthesis, machine learning algorithms and a performance from a similar-looking actor.

Slate spoke to a Kaleida director/producer who said that the company has done only five holograms so far resurrecting people who are no longer with us. Daniel Reynolds told the publication that this kind of project can cost between tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars.
