People are loving ‘Klaus’ — the new Christmas movie from one of the creators of ‘Despicable Me’

Every superhero has an origin story, and Old Saint Nick is apparently no exception. The Netflix Christmas family comedy “Klaus” tells the tale of a spoiled young man named Jesper who is forced to dive into the family business of delivering mail or find himself financially cut off. Jesper meets a reclusive, childless, widowed toymaker named Klaus and the rest, as they say, is history.

The Netflix original film, recently released on the streaming service, is getting great reviews: It has a 97% Audience Score from Rotten Tomatoes, where viewers are praising its beautiful animation and emotional story.

Seasoned Director And Stellar Cast

The film is the creation of director Sergio Pablos, a former Disney animator who worked on projects such as “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” and “Tarzan.” Pablos is also the creator of the “Despicable Me” franchise.

Another draw of this movie is the cast, which includes a lengthy list of favorite actors such as Joan Cusack, Rashida Jones, J.K. Simmons, Jason Schwartzman, Will Sasso and Norm Macdonald.

The New Film Could Become a Classic

It’s not every year that a holiday movie comes out with the potential to become a beloved favorite, but “Klaus” might beat those odds. Even though it is still early in the season, people are talking about the film.

In an era when it seems as though all animated films are made using 3D CGI technology, Pablos and his crew used a combination of classic 2D with hand-painted artwork and volumetric lighting and texturing tools more commonly reserved for movies made with CGI. The result is a look that feels timeless, traditional and modern at the same time. Viewers are gushing over the gorgeous imagery.

@SigneJeppeson tweeted, “I’m blown away. Every single shot looks like a painting. The animation is some of the best I’ve ever seen and I hope to god this rejuvenates the animation industry’s interest in 2D.”

Similarly, @couffelle tweeted, “#Klaus not only portrays an unusual yet heartwarming christmas story, it also delivers stunning visuals that manages to captivate you every single time.”

The storyline also seems to touch the hearts of viewers.

“Sweet and funny and so well done, so beautiful; I cried like a baby at the end,” tweeted Morgane Dalbergue.

“Klaus is 10/10; I laughed, cried and smiled though this film. The effort & passion is magic… one of the best Christmas/Animated movies I’ve seen,” tweeted @MegaDriveBrad
