Krispy Kreme is making special solar eclipse-themed doughnuts

Solar eclipse fever has officially hit the United States! And how do we Americans celebrate such an event? (You know, aside from staring directly at the sun even though we know we shouldn’t?) The same way we celebrate all special occasions, of course—with food.

Firework Oreos, Shamrock shakes, pumpkin everything. And now to celebrate the solar eclipse that will take place on Aug. 21, Krispy Kreme is selling eclipsed-themed doughnuts!

What are eclipse doughnuts, you ask? (Good question.)

Apparently, Krispy Kreme’s beloved glazed doughnuts will now be “eclipsed” with chocolate glaze. When you head to your nearest Krispy Kreme, you’ll actually be able to see the chocolate glaze waterfall covering the doughnuts. Just like the moon will cover the sun (but tastier)!

“The solar eclipse is a rare occasion providing a total sensory experience for viewers across the continental U.S. Chocolate will have the same effect as we introduce a first-time chocolate glazing of our iconic Original Glazed Doughnut,” Jackie Woodward, chief marketing officer of Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, said in a press release. “The Chocolate Glazed Doughnut is a delicious way to experience the solar eclipse—no matter where you are—and we can’t wait for fans to try it.”

So why all the hubbub about the eclipse? Is it really cool enough to have a doughnut named after it? Obviously, there’s never a bad reason to make a new doughnut, but the short answer is yes—this eclipse is pretty special!

First off, it’s a total solar eclipse, something that hasn’t been visible in the continental United States since 1979. Even more impressive? It’s been a whopping 99 years since the last total eclipse was visible across the entire continental U.S. This is history-making, people! Enjoy this celestial event (with a delicious chocolate doughnut!), but be sure to protect your eyesight while you watch.

Back to that intriguing doughnut, though—you can get an early taste of the Krispy Kreme eclipse doughnut during evening “hot light” hours on Aug. 19 and 20, and, of course, on Aug. 21. To find a participating Krispy Kreme near you, just click here. And remember, just like the actual eclipse, this is special doughnut will only be around for a limited time, so don’t miss it!
