The last surviving Blockbuster store is listed on Airbnb for nostalgic ’90s sleepovers

Airbnb

The scene: It’s a Friday evening in the mid-1990s. You arrive at Blockbuster. “My Girl” or “Dumb and Dumber”? Gobstoppers or Raisinets? Definitely grab some popcorn before pulling out your laminated Blockbuster card and heading to the checkout.

Are you waxing nostalgic yet? If so, you’ll be excited to hear that you could have a rad end-of-summer slumber party in the world’s last remaining Blockbuster, which is located in Bend, Oregon.

There’s a plot twist, though: You’ve got to be a Deschutes County resident to “make it a Blockbuster night” at this Airbnb rental, as the store’s manager is offering the overnight stays as a thank-you to the community for its continued support over the years.

Starting at 1 p.m. PST on Aug. 17, Deschutes County residents can head to Airbnb and request to book one of the three individual, one-night reservations that will take place on Sept. 18, 19 and 20. The overnight Blockbuster stay will cost just $4, which is a penny more than a movie rental at the store. When the designated time comes, you can request the booking here.

Included in the stay is an unlimited movie marathon, of course. Store manager Sandi Harding will be your Airbnb host, and before she hands over the keys, she’ll stock the shelves with all the movies you’d like.

The Blockbuster store has set up a living room space complete with a gigantic entertainment center and television, a pull-out couch, bean bags and pillows for you to cozy up with while picking from a stack of “new releases” from the ’90s.

Here’s what the listing says:

“Crack open a two-liter of Pepsi before locking into a video game, charting your future in a game of MASH, or watching movie after movie. But be wary of reciting ‘Bloody Mary’ in the staff bathroom off of the break room, as you just may summon the ghost rumored to haunt the store.”

Overnight guests can help themselves to the store’s snack stash, including Nerds, Raisinets and popcorn. Ordering a pizza seems like the right thing to do, too.

Airbnb

The rental allows up to four people, and groups should be from the same household to adhere to Airbnb, CDC and local COVID-19 protocols and guidelines.

After the final guests check out, Blockbuster customers can check out the living room space during store hours for a limited time.

Just remember, Airbnb guests: Be kind. Please rewind.
