Lea Michele chose ‘Glee’ co-star Jonathan Groff to be her ‘maid of honor’

Actress Lea Michele recently got engaged, and she’s ready to jump into wedding planning. She’s already begun putting together her wedding party, and took to social media to announce her pick for her maid of honor: fellow “Glee” alum Jonathan Groff.

Although the maid of honor role is usually filled by a woman, Michele obviously has no problem bucking tradition for her longtime BFF. There’s no  word yet on whether Groff will adopt a different moniker in lieu of “maid of honor” (“man of honor,” or “best man,” perhaps?), but their undeniable bond makes him perfect to stand beside Michele on her big day. Michele announced her engagement in a similarly simple fashion with a photo of her hand, adorned with her gorgeous diamond engagement ring, covering her face, accompanied simply by the word “Yes” along with a ring emoji:

Michele has been dating her fiancé, apparel company president Zandy Reich, for a year, although the pair have been friends for much longer.

As for her relationship with Groff, the two first became friends when they played opposite each other in Broadway’s “Spring Awakening” more than a decade ago. In 2014, Groff interviewed Michele for Teen Vogue, and she opened up about the impact their friendship has had on her life.

“At the end of the day I would most certainly give up ‘Spring Awakening,’ which was the greatest experience of my life, to have met you,” the actress told her friend. “In this lifetime, if there is anything you need, it’s a best friend. It’s so crazy to talk about ‘Spring Awakening’ because I feel like we’ve lived 10 lives since then.”
