LeBron James Signs On As Producer Of The ‘House Party’ Remake

Are you eager to see what he does with this '90s cult classic?

Do you remember the 1990s cult classic “House Party”? Starring the hip-hop duo Kid ‘n Play, and featuring Martin Lawrence and Tisha Campbell-Lawrence, the comedy follows high schoolers who plan a house party when their parents are out of town. Chaos, of course, ensues. It was the best kind of teen comedy, with ill-considered antics, sick beats and some amazing dance moves. Can anything today come close?

Perhaps only a remake of this classic favorite. Which, thanks in part to basketball star LeBron James, may soon be a reality.

James and his producing partner, Maverick Carter, will lead the project through their production company, SpringHill Entertainment. The screenplay will be penned by Stephen Glover and Jamal Olori, writers on the Netflix comedy “Atlanta.”

Although reboots of old movies are a major trend in the industry right now, James says this remake will be different. “This is definitely not a reboot. It’s an entirely new look for a classic movie,” James told The Hollywood Reporter. “Everyone I grew up with loved ‘House Party.’ To partner with this creative team to bring a new ‘House Party’ to a new generation is unbelievable.”

Hopefully the remake will feature plenty of awesome dance moves, like this epic scene from the original:

In addition to producing, James may even make a cameo in the movie, which will be SpringHill Entertainment’s first feature-length narrative film. James previously earned praise for his funny performance in Amy Schumer’s movie “Trainwreck,” in 2015.

As for James’ Cleveland Cavaliers teammates, he thinks he may need to give them a bit of a primer before they can fully appreciate the new movie. “They are too young, I think,” James told ESPN. “They weren’t [born] when it came out.”

Although this will be the first remake, the original “House Party” also spawned several sequels, the most recent of which was 2013’s straight-to-DVD “House Party: Tonight’s The Night.”

No expected release date has been announced yet for the remake. What do you think? Will you watch the new “House Party”?
