‘Legends Of The Hidden Temple’ is getting a reboot

Fans of Olmec, temple guards, Pendants of Life and the Shrine of the Silver Monkey will be thrilled to hear that a reboot of the kids’ TV game show “Legends of the Hidden Temple” is in the works.

Quibi, the upcoming short-form video streaming service, announced a new adult-oriented version of the Indiana Jones-inspired adventure competition on Dec. 16 on Twitter.

The service teased fans on its official Twitter feed with a GIF of Olmec, the talking Mayan temple God, who helped the show’s contestants navigate the game with clues and questions.

“Legends of the Hidden Temple” aired on the children’s cable network from 1993-1995 (and thereafter in reruns), achieving cult status among many ’90s kids who dreamed of tackling the jungle-centric obstacle course themselves — and who yelped every time a temple guard jumped out at a kid contestant during the final challenge.

The new version will have adults competing in a real jungle setting with tougher challenges and larger prizes. It’s meant to be an “scaled up” experience from the original and is being produced by Nickelodeon and Stone & Company Entertainment, who were also behind the first series.

After the announcement, lots of Twitter followers wanted to know how they could become a contestant. Like right now!

See this guy, for example. Twitter user @Jason_Burnham expressed a little bit of excitement about the show:

No word yet on if the show is holding auditions, but Quibi, which describes itself as “quick bites of captivating entertainment, created for mobile,” won’t launch until April 6, 2020.

Quibi has started to tease its lineup of short, binge-able, original programming, which will feature episodes that last 7-10 minutes. Along with a reboot of “Legends of the Hidden Temple,” the streaming platform will have a travel show with Joe Jonas, a cooking show with Andy Samberg and Chrissy Teigen in a Judge Judy role. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (as mentioned in the above tweet) and a plethora of other celebs from Zac Efron to Sophie Turner will also star in its offerings. Remakes of MTV’s “Singled Out” and “Punk’d” are also promised.

Quibi is backed by ex-Disney/DreamWorks head Jeffrey Katzenberg and seems to be on a roll. So chances are good that you’ll be seeing some grown-up children of the ’90s falling into a moat and trying to navigate the hidden temple next spring!

Will you be checking out the new “Legends” and its new streaming service?
