Lego is launching a ‘Sesame Street’ set

It may be hard to believe given their popularity and the fact that they’ve been around since 1969, but the loveable characters of “Sesame Street” have never collaborated with another pop culture icon that’s been around even longer — Lego.

Thanks to a Lego builder and fan of the long-time family favorite show, however, that has now changed with the launch of the first-ever “Sesame Street” set: Sesame Street 123.

The latest product from the Lego Ideas collection, this marks the first time “Sesame Street” characters will be in Lego minifigure form. The set features authentic details from the famous New York City neighborhood — like Bert and Ernie’s apartment and Big Bird’s nest, where grown-ups finally met Mr. Snuffleupagus.

The set comes with buildable minifigures like Cookie Monster, Elmo and Big Bird and “Sesame Street” locations like Hooper’s Store and Oscar the Grouch’s trash can. It also includes reminders of favorite “Sesame Street” songs and moments — like Ernie’s rubber duck. Once built, the 1,367-piece set measures 9 inches high, 13.5 inches wide and 8.2 inches deep.

While it may look like it’s for children, the Lego set actually designed for ages 18 and older. So, it’s geared toward older “Sesame Street” fans or will need to be built by your kids with your help and supervision. The set is on Lego.com and in Lego stores nationwide for $119.

“For the first time in the history of Lego Ideas, we also had the opportunity to create brand new minifigures for a set — bringing something new and exciting to our Lego fans,” Federico Begher, vice president of global marketing at The Lego Group, said in a press release. “Knowing the impact ‘Sesame Street’ has had on the world for decades, sharing similar values with generations past and present, this felt like an exciting way to blend novelty with nostalgia, and pay homage to the truly iconic 123 Sesame Street through Lego Ideas.”

While this is the first “Sesame Street” kit, it is far from the first Lego set to be inspired by movies or television shows. In addition to their licensed lines for franchises like Star Wars, Harry Potter, Marvel superheroes and others, you can also buy sets for films like “Ghostbusters” and TV show-inspired favorites such as “The Big Bang Theory” and “Friends.

Music fans can even get their hands on a Lego Grand Piano that looks not only fun to build, but also plays music. The one-of-a-kind Lego Grand Piano Set has all the features of a real grand piano, including a removable 25-key keyboard. Builders can create their own musical masterpiece or select “auto-play”  and have the piano play one of four pre-set songs.
