A Live-Action Version Of ‘The Little Mermaid’ Is Coming, But Before You Get Too Excited…

People are obviously excited for the upcoming “Beauty and the Beast” live-action movie that hits theaters on Mar. 17, but what happens after you’ve gone to the theater to see it four times? What’s there to look forward to next? Well, how does “The Little Mermaid” sound?

Yep, according to a trailer which was recently released, you can expect a live-action mermaid movie in your future.

Now, before you start belting out “Part Of Your World,” we’re sorry to build up your hopes then dash them to the ground, but this movie isn’t from Disney, and it doesn’t follow the same Disney storyline. Instead, it’s coming from Conglomerate Media and Kingsway Productions, and it’s based on the original fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen about a mermaid who sells her soul, but can’t live without it.

The story is set in Mississippi in 1837. A sister and brother travel to a fair that’s full of magic tricks and magical creatures. This is where they find the mermaid, on display. It’s up to the siblings to save the mermaid and her soul.

There are, of course, some similar elements to the much-loved Disney version, but you’ll need to come to grips with the fact that there will be no Flounder, Sebastian or Scuttle, no Flotsam, Jetsam or Ursula, and no rousing renditions of “Under the Sea” or “Kiss the Girl.” But there are still, well, mermaids, so it’s got that going for it!

There’s a great cast of actors, too, from Academy Award winner Shirley Maclaine to the young and talented Loreto Peralta.

According to the trailer, this will be coming in 2017, but there’s no exact date to mark on your calendars just yet.

So what do you think, Disney fans? Are you excited for this version or is it just a tease? We’re going to check this one out, but we’ll probably still hold our breath for Ariel and Eric to take to the screen in a live-action version of the Disney favorite.
