Some people say “boys will be boys” to excuse poor behavior from boys and men. However, country crooner Luke Bryan said he is raising his children to be gentlemen and he is proud at how his lessons in good manners have stuck.

Bryan opened up at the 2018 iHeartRadio Music Festival about his 10-year-old son Thomas, 8-year-old son Tatum and his 16-year-old nephew Til, whom he is raising. Bryan said the thing that makes him the proudest is “how [they’ve carved a] path toward being gentlemen and gentlemanly boys.”

Despite having a superstar for a dad and uncle, the boys are down-to-Earth.

“They come home and sit down they do their homework and I’m like, ‘I didn’t do that when I was a kid,'” says the 2018 CMA Entertainer of the Year nominee. “They’re just well-rounded kids — learning farm life and how to live on a farm and do outdoor things, but they’ve also come with me and been on set of ‘American Idol’ and to these big cities and watched me do Dodgers Stadium and [have seen] the whole world and have a nice perception of it.”

Luke Bryan and his wife Caroline brought nephew Til into their home following the sudden death of Ben Cheshire, who was Til’s father and Bryan’s brother-in-law. (Til’s mother Kelly, who was Bryan’s sister, had passed away years earlier.) In addition to Til, the Bryans also took on the responsibility of caring for the Cheshires’ college-aged nieces, Jordan and Kris.

“We never thought twice about it,” said Caroline Bryan about their decision to raise their nieces and nephew. “You know, it was never something that he and I had to sit down and talk about, you know, ‘Should we take this on?’ We just did it.”

Bryan said he feels the same, but admitted it was an adjustment.

“I woke up one day and I’m raising a teen,” he told People. “And it’s a challenge because my main thing with Til is just properly giving the right amount of advice and realizing you’re talking to someone who is becoming an adult. I have to be that parent role where if he does something, he needs to get in trouble, but I want to be a friend to him, too.”

Sounds like his efforts are paying off, and he is raising three kind and respectful gentlemen!
