This Expensive Whisky Was Distilled Just After World War II

The Macallan, a renowned whisky distillery in northeast Scotland, has released their oldest bottle yet.

Named The Macallan 72 Years Old in Lalique – The Genesis Decanter, this single malt Scotch has been aging since 1946 — meaning it was distilled soon after the end of World War II.

(And just a reminder: Scotch is a whisky distilled in Scotland made from malted barley, in while in the United States we call it whisky or bourbon and its made from corn!)

There are only 600 decanters of this rare whiskey worldwide, which carries an ABV of 42%. It will hit the market in August at a cost of $65,000 for a 750-milliliter bottle.

“For its 72 years of maturation, the deceptively light color hints that this is not an ordinary single malt,” Nick Savage, The Macallan’s master distiller, said in a statement on the company website. He continued:

“Reminiscent of a time gone by, it carries an exquisite balance of strong, sweet oak with the peaty spirit shaping its refined character. The whisky delivers surprise after surprise as aromas of fruit follow distinctive hints of peat, all the way through to the back of the mouth where it is finished off with a lingering hint of rich fruit and oak.”

It sounds like the whisky has a distinguished taste befitting of its age.

The Macallan also recently opened a new distillery in Craigellachie, Scotland, which includes a tasting library with 952 bottles. You can book tours beginning June 2, 2018 on the distillery’s website.

“We’re not satisfied just being the leading Scotch whisky brand, but the ultimate luxury spirit in the world,” Crawford Gillies, chairman of The Edrington Group, which owns The Macallan, told USA Today. “This is the facility that fits that image.”

The Macallan recently broke the record for the most expensive whisky sold, and be prepared for even more sticker shock: A bottle of The Macallan Valerio Adami 1926 60-Year-Old was auctioned off for a cool $1.1 million.

The whisky brand beat their own record with the sale, having set the previous record earlier this year.
