Olympic ice dancing duo Madison Chock and Evan Bates open up about falling in love on the ice

Falling while ice skating is bad. Falling in love while ice skating? That’s more like it.

Considering all of the chemistry two performers have to develop in order to flawlessly perform complicated routines while wearing death blades on their feet, it helps if they get along. Madison Chock and Evan Bates, however, take that chemistry to another level. The U.S. ice dancing pair, who made their Olympic debut this week in Pyeongchang, South Korea, are not only a team on the ice, they’re a couple off of it. They recently opened up to People.com about how hours on ice sparked the flames of romance.

Bates, 28, and Chock, 25, initially teamed up professionally in 2011, and it didn’t take long for the two to realize they had something there.

“Maddie and I met and we were competitors for a long time. Then, even when we started skating together, we were just friends at first,” Bates told People.com. “We had a really good relationship and just as we got older, we sort of fell in love on the ice and realized that we should be together.”

The two began dating in 2016, and so far it’s working out pretty well.

“We go through everything together, all the highs and all lows,” Chock added. “You just really have to be on the same page and have the same goals and the same work ethic, which we are fortunate to have and it works really well.”

Yeah, they are basically #RelationshipGoals.

The two currently sit in seventh place after the first round of ice dancing at the Winter Olympics, despite an injury from which Chock has been struggling.

Speaking of chemistry, these two have their work cut out for them. Because while the couple currently in first, Canadians Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, say they are not dating, absolutely nobody on the internet believes them. They are so hot, they melt more ice than global warming! The two have become a real-life “will-they-won’t-they?” sitcom and have literally become too sexy for the Olympics.

Look away, kids!

But just maybe, a good old American love story will be enough to conquer syrupy Canadian sexual tension. As Bates told People.com, working hard towards their goal has only made their bond stronger.

“If everything had been going swimmingly over the past few seasons, with gold medals galore, I think, through it all, the difficult times created a really beautiful relationship that we now share,” Bates said. “Who knows? Maybe it would’ve never happened if everything was going great.”

These two are pretty darn cute, aren’t they?
