Surveillance video shows married off-duty cops stop an armed robbery during their date night

Detective Chase McKeown and Officer Nicole McKeown of the Elizabethtown Police Department in Kentucky were enjoying dinner together at Raising Cane’s when they thwarted an attempted armed robbery. The married couple was off-duty, but when a masked gunman entered the restaurant and threatened staff on Feb. 22, the cops swiftly took action.

“We’re trained for those kinds of situations,” Nicole told Wave 3 News. “And when it comes to people’s lives being in danger, I feel like any other officer here would have done the exact same thing.”

Louisville Metro Police Department posted footage of the dramatic incident to Facebook:

Wow! The post has since racked up nearly 10,000 reactions, more than 1,000 comments and more than 8,000 shares. People were super-impressed with the bravery displayed by these off-duty cops.

The newlyweds have only been married for six months, and this trial by fire showed that their teamwork on the job can only enhance their relationship.

“In marriage, we’ve got each other,” Chase told the news station. “We’re going to talk things out, we’re going to deal with whatever comes at us, we’ve had a lot we’ve dealt with in the last six months. It’s just another, like she said, another layer of trust that adds to and shows that I don’t have to worry about making sure she’s OK. She doesn’t have to worry about making sure I’m OK. We just take care of it.”

The Elizabethtown Police Department took to Instagram to share the video and praise their officers’ quick and heroic action as well:

“We couldn’t be more proud of two of our finest, Detective and Officer McKeown,” read the caption. “You read that right: they are married! While on a date night in Louisville this past weekend, the two thwarted an armed robbery at Raising Cane’s restaurant. Surveillance shows the courageous and selfless actions they took to intervene. They were just trying to have a peaceful date night! #epd #protectandserve #excitingdate #couplegoals #justdoingwhattheydo”

Congratulations, and here’s to many more years of marriage and teamwork on the force!
