Marshmallow Peeps Oreos Are Apparently Causing A Surprising Side Effect

So, do you remember those hot pink Marshmallow Peeps Oreos that debuted in February? Well, some people who’ve eaten them are reporting a… colorful side effect: a hot pink visit to the bathroom. We don’t know how to feel about this.

Apparently, the filling of the Peeps Oreo (which has been flavored and dyed to look like a Marshmallow Peep) has caused some consumers’ stool to allegedly turn pink.

This is likely due to the inclusion of Red Dye No. 3 in the ingredients. Not only can this stuff dye your tongue, as anyone who has eaten brightly colored junk food knows, it can also evidently dye your stool if you eat enough of it.

It should also be noted that the safety of Red Dye No. 3 has recently been debated over the past few years. Though a small report has linked the dye to a potential increase in risk of cancer, the FDA still says the dye is safe for human consumption.

Another point of contention: no one has actually seen the pink stools in question. Because nobody in their right mind would upload a picture of the goings-on in their bathroom to the internet, we just have to believe people when they say it.

The staff members at Simplemost were among those to try the Marshmallow Peeps Oreos and did not experience the alleged after-effects.

A food writer at Spoon University also tested out the cookies with the specific intention of seeing whether or not her bathroom business changed—spoiler alert, it didn’t.

It’s likely that in order to see a colorful change in your regular excretions, you’d have to eat a whole heck of a lot of these cookies. Or everyone who says they’ve experienced the pink poop is perhaps embellishing the truth because it makes for a good story.
