McDonald’s recently did something very special for fans of the “Rick and Morty” animated series. The chain brought back its Szechuan sauce, making this the first time since 1998 that the sauce had been available.
If you’re not familiar with “Rick and Morty,” it’s an animated show from Adult Swim, and it’s about a grandson and grandfather who travel to other dimensions to have the craziest adventures.
In the episode that kicked off the third season, Rick’s character made a plea to McDonald’s to bring back its Szechuan Sauce, which was only available for a limited time back in 1998 to promote Disney’s “Mulan.”

Szechuan sauce is a sweet and tangy plum sauce that is made to pair perfectly with McNuggets, so it’s no wonder Rick wanted it to make another appearance at the fast-food chain. It sounds amazing!
Apparently, McDonald’s heard Rick’s (along with fans of the series) cries for the sauce to make a comeback, and they delivered. But, before you get too excited, it’s important to note that this was a very, very special limited-time offer, so it’s not as simple as going down to your local Mickey D’s to grab some, unfortunately.

You see, McDonald’s announced the sauce’s comeback during a live Periscope video. Anyone who tweeted while the video played on July 30 was eligible to win one of the jugs of the sauce they were giving away.

The brand tweeted, “Pro tip: Always check your DMs,” so if you were tweeting during the video, you’ll definitely want to keep an eye on your direct messages on Twitter to see if you’re one of the lucky winners.
The first to receive a jug of the sauce from McDonald’s was, of course, the “Rick and Morty” co-creator Justin Roiland.

Unfortunately, there don’t seem to be plans to bring the sauce back again now that the period to enter the giveaway has ended.
“For now, only a limited amount of Szechuan Sauce got through from the always-1998 dimension,” a McDonald’s spokesperson said in a statement. “Who knows where space-time will take us because when our customers speak, we listen.”
The power of “Rick and Morty” is pretty incredible.
If you’d like to see this sauce permanently resurrected, make sure you let McDonald’s know. Because apparently, they’re in the business of delivering for their fans!
In the meantime, you can try your hand at making a batch of Szechuan sauce for yourself. Here’s an example of how it’s done:
