Mike Myers hints that ‘Austin Powers 4’ may be happening
Some very shagadelic news leaked out of Hollywood this week.
In a roundabout way, comedy icon Mike Myers said a new Austin Powers movie may finally become a reality! The actor let the news slip during an appearance on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” when he was asked by Robin Roberts whether we’d ever be “blessed” with a fourth movie starring the sex-crazed British spy.
“I can neither confirm nor deny a movie, the existence or non-existence of a movie, should a movie like that exist or not exist,” Myers said with a smile.
As the studio audience cheered, he finally added, “It’s looking good, so we’ll see what happens.”
Yeah, baby!
The beloved 1990s/early 2000s movie series that brought together pop culture legends like Tom Cruise, Beyonce, Michael Caine, Will Ferrell and Carrie Fisher could give us its first new entry since 2002.
The original trilogy — which starred Myers in four wildly different roles, including hero (Austin Powers) and nemesis (Dr. Evil) — was a massive box-office success and a mild hit with critics. Adjusted for inflation, the Austin Powers movies made more than $815 million in American theaters alone, with each entry grossing more than the one before it.
In the movies, Austin Powers was a British spy who was cryogenically frozen in the 1960s before being thawed in the ’90s to do battle with Dr. Evil. It was loaded with jokes about the misogyny and sexism seen in the James Bond franchise, at which it constantly poked fun. The series also acted as a time capsule of ’90s culture, complete with references to “The Jerry Springer Show” and dated phrases like “talk to the hand.”
Since the series ended, Myers stayed busy with his starring role in the Shrek franchise, as well as other movie roles and directed his first film, a critically acclaimed documentary called “Supermensch,” in 2013. Since 2017, he’s been the host of ABC’s “The Gong Show.”
I’d definitely be down for another Austin Powers movie. But will Beyonce return as Foxxy Cleopatra?
We can only hope so!
