Miley Cyrus is working on a Metallica cover album

Miley Cyrus is known primarily for her pop and country tunes, but now the singer is tackling the hard rock genre with a new album of Metallica covers.

“We’ve been working on a Metallica cover album,” she told fashion designer Rick Owens for Interview magazine. “We’re so lucky to be able to continue to work on our art during all of this. At first, it felt uninspiring and now I’ve been totally ignited.”

In 2019, Cyrus performed a rendition of Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters” at the Glastonbury Festival in England. Check out a partial video of the performance in the YouTube clip below, which was posted by the Miley Cyrus Nation fan club:

Cyrus also spoke about how the pandemic’s effect on her touring schedule has impacted her.

“This is the longest I’ve ever gone without being on the road,” she said. “I’ve been touring for the last ten years, and this is the first year that I haven’t done it. Dolly Parton, who’s my godmother, has been touring for the last 40 years, and this is the first time she hasn’t been on the road.”

Cyrus has also covered a number of other prominent artists, including her famous godmother. Here she is performing Parton’s “Jolene” as part of her Backyard Sessions, posted to her official YouTube account, in 2012:

This year, her covers have included Blondie, the Beatles, the Cure, and Britney Spears. Cyrus recently performed a rendition of “Zombie” by the Cranberries for the virtual #SaveOurStages (#SOS) Fest, which raised funds to preserve grassroots music venues affected by the pandemic.

On Oct. 19, the Cranberries tweeted their praise for Cyrus’ version of their hit song, noting that late lead singer Dolores O’Riordan would be “very impressed”:

“We were delighted to hear of Miley Cyrus’ cover of Zombie at Whisky a Go Go #SOSFEST in LA at the weekend,” read the tweet accompanying a link to a video of her performance. “It’s one of the finest covers of the song that we’ve heard.”

There’s no word yet on when her album of Metallica covers will drop. Cyrus is also working on a full album of her own material — her first since 2017 — but says she won’t release it until she can tour again. She’s definitely staying busy!
