Mindy Kaling gives birth to her first child—and the baby’s name is so sweet

Despite her celeb status, Mindy Kaling tried to keep her pregnancy under wraps.

In fact, it was actually Oprah Winfrey who broke the news that Kaling was expecting.

In July, Kaling revealed to Winfrey that she was five months along while the two were doing press for their movie “A Wrinkle in Time.”

After that, Kaling began talking about her baby bump and the road to becoming a mom on more and more talk shows.

Because once Winfrey outs you, there’s really no turning back!

“If anyone is going to announce big news about your private life, Oprah Winfrey is the person,” Kaling said in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres. “You can’t complain that much about it… So if there’s one person I have to tell my daughter about that revealed her existence to the world, Oprah is pretty good.”

Kaling and Winfrey’s collaboration alongside co-stars Reese Witherspoon and Storm Reid in “A Wrinkle in Time” made the cover of TIME magazine this week, and Kaling made sure to celebrate the news on Twitter. The film is set to hit theaters on March 9, 2018.

And now we’ve learned that Kaling gave birth to a baby girl on Dec. 15. She named her daughter Katherine Swati Kaling.

Her middle name is in honor of Kaling’s mother, Swati, who passed away in 2012 from pancreatic cancer (in a brutal twist of fate on the same day “The Mindy Project” was picked up by Fox).

How touching.

Kaling had previously announced the sex of her child to DeGeneres, telling her, “I am not waiting. I wanted to know way early. I’m having a girl!”

Kaling revealed a lot about the type of mother she hopes to be in an interview with TODAY:

“My mom was incredibly fierce and so devoted to us. [She] just loved us and wanted us to be happy no matter what we did. My career choice was not something that she was familiar with, and she was just so supportive of that—and if I could give that to my child, just that openminded-ness, I’d be so happy.”

It certainly sounds like the actress is ready to empower her daughter and support her dreams, and we couldn’t approve more.

Kaling is not linked to anyone romantically publicly, and she’s kept the identity of the baby’s father private.
