Mom’s post about parenting that calls for a mix of ‘Mary Poppins and The Hulk’ is going viral
Parents know that raising kids requires a delicate balancing act. Depending on the situation, you may have to utilize a host of different and seemingly opposing skills. One minute, you need the patience of a saint, and the next you need the zeal of a motivational speaker.
One mom took to Facebook to describe the sometimes extreme and paradoxical approaches that are needed to effectively care for her kids, and her examples are both spot-on and hilarious.
Amy Weatherly describers her mothering style as “a complete mix of going back and forth between acting like Mary Poppins and The Hulk”:
Weatherly begins her post by explaining that she starts the day by lovingly greeting her child, only to realize how pressed for time they are minutes later, which causes her to start to barking orders like a drill sergeant.
“Me first thing in the morning: Good morning, baby. How did you sleep? Did you have the sweetest dreams? Gosh, I love you so much,” she wrote.
“Me ten minutes later: HURRY UP. I DON’T KNOW WHERE YOUR SHOES ARE. THEY ARE NOT MY RESPONSIBILITY, BUT YOU’D BETTER FIND THEM AND YOU’D BETTER FIND THEM FAST, OR ELSE. I SWEAR…NO. NO, YOU MAY NOT HAVE COOKIES FOR BREAKFAST. YOU GET WHAT YOU GET. I AM A PERSON, NOT A BREAKFAST BUFFET. IT IS TIME FOR SCHOOL THOUGH. STOP MOVING IN SLOTH MODE AND GOOOOOOO!”
She then goes on to explain how the rest of the day goes similarly, with her vacillating between being as sweet as pie and super-strict, all within a matter of minutes.
For example, bedtime starts with her wishing her child sweet dreams and telling them how proud she is but quickly devolves into repeated commands to get back into bed.
“Motherhood is a very strange glass cage of emotion,” she wrote.
Parents everywhere could totally relate, and her post has been shared more than 60,000 times. It has more than 9,000 comments, with many moms chiming in that they often feel the exact same way.
“Hulk Mom is followed by Mom guilt for being so Hulkish so then you sprinkle a little extra Mary Poppins on and it only comes full circle to bite you back so then you’re extra Hulkish,” wrote one mom.
Do you ever feel like this as a mom?
