9 Money Saving Secrets To Use At Michaels

Michaels is one of those stores that you walk into needing one specific thing, but you wind up leaving the store with a shopping cart full of “necessary” stuff.  This is especially true around the holidays for me.

Thankfully, there are some tricks to make sure you save the most money during your next trip. Here are 9 things that you should know before you step into Michaels.

1.  You Can Use Competitor Coupons

Michaels will accept from coupons from some of their main competitors:

  • JoAnne Fabrics
  • Hobby Lobby
  • ACMoore
  • Ben Franklin

You can use any coupon up to 50% off any single item. Unfortunately, you can’t use them with Michaels coupons. However, you should be able to split up your purchase to take advantage of them all.

2. Price Match

According to Michael’s official Terms and Conditions, they offer price matching. “Michaels will match any competitor’s advertised price on items identical in brand and size. Advertised product must be currently valid and not expired.” Simply show the ad to the cashier and they will adjust the price.

3. Use Multiple Coupons

While not as great as Kohls, Michaels still lets you use multiple coupons during the same transaction.  However, they must be different types of coupons. This means if you use a coupon for 40% off one item and another coupon for 20% off your entire purchase, the 20% coupon will not apply to the item that already has the 40% discount.

Note:  Our readers have had varying luck with this one, but always good to try.

4. Download Their Mobile App

Michaels has a great app that loyalists swear by. Downloading their app provides easy access to the latest coupons. Typically, you will find 20-50% off coupons inside.  I love it because I normally forget the traditional coupons and can pull these up while at the register to figure out the best ones to use.

5. In Store Kids Classes = Babysitting While You Shop

Michaels has all sorts of events for both grown-ups and adults. The classes can range in price but a lot of them you just pay for the supplies or they charge $2. A small price to pay for some quality alone time.   Here’s a list of the current events.

6.  Take Advantage of Military, Senior And Teacher Discounts

Michaels has some great discounts you can take advantage of:

  • Military: get a 15% discount on all in-store orders. You will need your military ID to get the discount.
  • Seniors: If you are 55 or older, you will receive 10% off your entire in-store order. You will need your ID for the discount.
  • Teachers: They will provide a 15% off select products designed for the classroom. These savings are available for in-store purchases.

7.  Know When The Coupons Come

Michaels is fairly predictable when it comes to their coupons. There should always be a 40-50% off coupon available Sunday through Thursday.  In addition, a 20% off your entire order coupon will appear a couple of times a month.

8. Get Random Time Sensitive Coupons

According to Passionate Penny Pincher, Michaels will randomly provide high value coupons that are good for one day only. Typically, these coupons are delivered via their Facebook page. So sign-up to follow them.

9. Shop The Clearance Aisle After Holidays

Take advantage of their clearance bins and aisle.  You can find a lot of great seasonal items in these areas for a big discount that is between 50-90% off the regular price.  If you plan a little ahead of time, you can pick up items for next year’s holidays for a steal.
