The 4 Stars of ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ Had a Reunion

Twenty-two years after the release of “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” its four stars reunited in late January to look back at their classic romantic comedy.

Maybe the reunion was limited to an Entertainment Weekly cover story and a short Cast Reunions web special. Maybe there won’t be a “My Best Friend’s Wedding 2.” But still, there was great merriment among Dermot Mulroney, Julia Roberts, Cameron Diaz and Rupert Everett as they looked back on their groundbreaking 1997 film.

The quartet still had great chemistry together as they recalled shooting the movie on location in Chicago.

While Mulroney (who played the groom, Michael) and Roberts (his best friend, Julianne) are close in real life, and Diaz (the bride, Kimmie) has run into Roberts socially, Everett (Julianne’s boss and gay bestie, George) said in the on-camera interview that it had been close to 15 years since he had seen Julia Roberts.

The cast clicked from the start during filming.

Roberts says the scene that made the movie for her was when Julianne tells Michael she loves him at last. “The scene, for me, that made it feel so authentic and earnest is when I finally tell Dermot’s character, ‘Pick me. Let me make you happy,'” she said “Just that line: That’s just so succinct and sweet and meaningful.”

The famous “I Say A Little Prayer” sing-a-long in the seafood restaurant wasn’t written until just before the movie starting shooting.

Several scenes, including the ending, were reshot based in part on test screening feedback from audiences.

Diaz was truly traumatized by the karaoke scene. “I was terrified to do that scene, for real. I allowed the true terror of singing in front of people to be alive in me,” she said.
