The enduring friendship between country superstars Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn is one of Nashville’s most beloved stories. That story will be made into a Lifetime Original Movie, “Patsy & Loretta,” starring Megan Hilty from “Smash” and Tony Award-winning actress Jessie Mueller.

In the early 1960s, Loretta Lynn moved to Music City to try to break into the booming country music business. At that time, country music was a male-dominated scene, and Lynn was just a small-town girl from Butcher Hollow, Kentucky.

However, she got support from a very surprising source: Patsy Cline, a county music legend and household name, with hits like “Walkin’ After Midnight” and “I Fall to Pieces.” Upon meeting the fresh-faced talent, Cline took Lynn under her wing, rather than viewing her as a potential threat.

The two had a mutually supportive and rewarding friendship. The close-knit pair bonded over husband troubles and the difficulty of life as a female musician in the sexist country music scene. Sadly, Cline tragically died in a plane crash in 1963 at the age of just 30 years old.

“She was my only girlfriend at the time,” Lynn told to The Denver Post. “She took me under her wing, and when I lost her, it was something else. I still miss her to this day. I wrote ‘You Ain’t Woman Enough To Take My Man,’ and she said, ‘Loretta, that’s a damn hit.’ It shocked me, because you don’t expect somebody like Patsy Cline to tell you that you have a hit.”

The story of their friendship and Cline’s shocking death on the Piper PA-24 Comanche plane (which crashed due to inclement weather and had pilots who had not undergone proper training for the plane they were flying) will come to life in this new feature-length television movie.

Hilty shared her excitement about starring in the new project on Instagram. The actress posted a photo of her at the Patsy Cline Museum. “I have fallen deeply in love with this incredible powerhouse of a woman and I can’t believe I get to walk in her shoes (or bedazzled cowboy boots) for the next month!” she wrote alongside the image.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen Cline and Lynn’s friendship retold in a movie, though. Sissy Spacek won an Oscar for her portrayal of Lynn in the critically acclaimed 1981 film “Coal Miner’s Daughter.”

The Lifetime Original Movie “Patsy & Loretta” will film on location in Nashville and premieres sometime in late 2019.
