Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s new photo of Archie pays tribute to Princess Diana

While it ‘s subtle, a new photo of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s baby boy pays tribute to the late Princess of Wales.

On May 13, the couple posted a shot of Meghan’s hands holding Baby Archie’s feet in front of a hazy backdrop of forget-me-nots.

The flowers were among Princess Diana’s favorites.  When the “White Garden” at Kensington Palace was dedicated in Princess Diana’s memory, white forget-me-nots were included. Their name, of course, is a nod to her being gone but not forgotten.

Below, you can hear a couple of the gardeners at Kensington Palace talk about the garden, memories of Princess Diana, and their inspiration for the flowers, as posted by the @Historic Royal Palaces account.

The May 13 photo of the baby and the flowers was posted to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s @sussexroyal Instagram account, their only social media handle at the moment.

It read: “Paying tribute to all mothers today – past, present, mothers-to-be, and those lost but forever remembered. We honor and celebrate each and every one of you.”

The post also noted that it was Mother’s Day in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Kenya, Japan, and several countries across Europe, and that it was the Duchess’ first Mother’s Day.

The sentiment concluded with a poem from Nayyirah Waheed: “my / mother / was / my first country; / the first place i ever lived.”

While some users complained that it wasn’t Mother’s Day in the U.K. and that people wanted to see more of Archie than his feet, negative posts were apparently being removed — either by the account itself or by the reporting of bullying posts to Instagram, according to other commenters. Fortunately, the post also had many defenders.

“Meghan, you are such a talented, social media savvy Duchess bringing class, sensitivity and a NEW regal approach to being Royal in the digital age!” Instagram user @brycecoaching replied to the post.

Danish Instagram user @janicekongsbak clarified that besides the countries highlighted, “It’s also Mothers Day in Denmark 🇩🇰 – what a beautiful photo of those tiny little feet, and what a sweet tribute to Princess Diana. She would be so proud of her sons [sic] choice of wife. She was never one to stay on the ‘main road.'”

And user @gotsirela said, “What a beautiful photo, I am a reflexologist and your baby’s feet are so full of character and intelligence and completely positive.”

Another interesting detail, as Vanity Fair pointed out, is that the post appears to have Meghan’s personal social media and blogger style all over it. The Duchess ran The Tig website for several years and also had an active Instagram presence. She took down both her blog and Instagram accounts ahead of marrying Prince Harry in May 2018.

“This is the sort of sweet, revealing-without-exactly-being-revealing, intimate-feeling, aesthetically-pleasing shot that makes for a successful Instagram post from an account with a large following,” the magazine said. It added that the post “would seem to signal, though, that we are in for some more intriguing, homespun imagery to come, the sort that would not have been out of place on Meghan’s account of yore.”

What a sweet first Mother’s Day post from Meghan and Harry’s Sussex Royal Instagram account! We can’t wait to see more.
