Niagara Falls Is Turning Green This Weekend For St. Patrick’s Day

The Niagara Falls will be even more of a sight to see this St. Patrick’s Day. In honor of the special Irish holiday, the falls are turning bright green! The spectacle is made possible thanks to hundreds of LED lights placed along the falls.

Those visiting Niagara Falls on March 17 will be able to see them change to a gorgeous green color every 15 minutes throughout the evening, beginning at dusk and lasting through 2 a.m.

This is done in conjunction with Tourism Ireland’s “global greening” effort for St. Patrick’s Day, and the Niagara Falls are just one of the many attractions that participate in the festivities.

Attractions such as the Empire State Building, the Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Sydney Opera House are just a few of the other locations around the world that will light up green in honor of St. Patrick’s Day on March 17.

According to the Tourism Ireland Twitter account, some have already gotten a sneak peek of what the waterfalls will look like with a green glow:

If you’re unable to make it to Niagara Falls on March 17, there are still plenty of opportunities to see the falls all lit up. There’s a full calendar of events on the Niagara Falls website of “Illumination” events stretching through the end of December.

For example, the falls will light up green again on April 22 to honor Earth Day. And they’ll be red, white and blue for Memorial Day on May 27. Those are just a few of the lighting ceremonies coming up, so be sure to pencil in the dates on your calendar to make your trip to see these spectacular waterfalls all the more special.

The Niagara Falls isn’t the only body of water that goes green for St. Patrick’s Day, either. In fact, the Chicago River has been dyed green to honor the holiday every year since 1962.

According to the Chicago Tribune Twitter account, crews will begin to dye the waters on March 16:

The city of Savannah, Georgia, is home to the second largest St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in the world, according to Savannah.com, and as part of the city’s celebrations, the town dyes all of the fountains in the downtown area a festive green hue.

So, if you can’t make it to see the Niagara Falls lit up this year, it doesn’t mean you have to completely miss out on some fun water-coloring sights.
