Nintendo is releasing a new version of Super Nintendo Classic Edition

Nintendo

For every kid who whiled away childhood summer days in the basement playing Mario Kart and Legend of Zelda, here’s some amazing news: Nintendo is re-releasing the Super Nintendo.

Get ready to indulge all your ’90s kid nostalgia—and see if your Street Fighter skills have held up over the years.

The system looks identical to the one so many of us had back in the day, with a few key differences. Whereas the original Super Nintendo system was fairly large and clunky, the 2017 version is only slightly bigger than the palm of your hand.

It comes with two controllers with longer cords than the original versions, and an HDMI cable (fancy!).

The biggest difference? This updated version of Super Nintendo doesn’t require game cartridges. Instead, it comes pre-loaded with 20 classic Super NES games, and a new game, Star Fox 2, that can only be accessed by beating the first level of Star Fox 1.

This is good news for convenience, but bad news for those of us who considered blowing into the cartridges to get them to work a key part of the Nintendo experience.

Here’s a full list of games that are included:

  • Contra III: The Alien Wars
  • Donkey Kong Country
  • EarthBound
  • Final Fantasy III
  • F-ZERO
  • Kirby Super Star
  • Kirby’s Dream Course
  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
  • Mega Man X
  • Secret of Mana
  • Star Fox
  • Star Fox 2
  • Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting
  • Super Castlevania IV
  • Super Ghouls ’n Ghosts
  • Super Mario Kart
  • Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
  • Super Mario World
  • Super Metroid
  • Super Punch-Out!!
  • Yoshi’s Island

Amazing, right?

This Is The Latest Nintendo Re-Release

Last year, Nintendo released a similarly updated version of its classic Nintendo system, and it sold out instantly, leaving many gamers frustrated. This time around, Nintendo told the video game blog Kotaku that it was shipping “significantly more units of Super NES Classic Edition than we did of NES Classic Edition.”

Thank goodness.

The Super Nintendo Classic will be available September 29 for the very reasonable price of $79.99. Keep an eye on the Nintendo site for retailer information and more updates.

Disney movies and characters get entire theme parks devoted to them, so why not give video games a chance to become a part of the real-life amusement category, too? Nintendo buffs, get ready: Super Nintendo World is coming to the Universal Studios Japan location, so get ready to plan a visit.

The video game-inspired theme park was announced last year, but now it appears as though construction is underway. So, get those controllers, er, park tickets ready, and let the playing begin!

The biggest attraction by far will be the “Mario Kart” ride, which will finally give you the chance to race all of your favorite characters in real life.

A statement from Nintendo says the plan is to have the theme park built before the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.
