Olivia Wilde’s fashion line is made up of used clothing to help solve our ‘fashion waste crisis’
Olivia Wilde’s brand Conscious Commerce has teamed up with thredUP to do some good for the Earth. In an effort to reduce clothing waste, the brands have created a fashion line together that’s made completely out of used clothing.
The line, called Choose Used, features fun, bold printed tees, jackets and other items that promote the mission of shopping for used goods over buying from fast fashion brands. Sayings such as “I Wear Used Clothes” and “Thank You for Choosing Used” cover the clothing items in the collection, giving everyone who makes a purchase the opportunity to “wear your support,” as the Choose Used webpage says. Each design is screen-printed on a used piece of clothing.
For every item purchased, 10% of net proceeds go to the thredUP Circular Fashion Fund, which is dedicated to keeping supporting sustainable fashion practices. The Choose Used Collection features what the page calls “an inclusive range of sizes and styles” that cost from $10.99 up to $100.
Take a look at what the line has to offer in the preview @thredup gave on Instagram.
Graphic tees make up a big part of the casual clothing collection. This one proclaims it is “used goods”:

The pieces are simple, yet statement-making at the same time. This clean white t-shirt features brightly-colored lettering:

And there’s no denying that looking good and doing good will put a pep in your step, as with this video:

There’s also a jean jacket, available later this spring if you sign up for the thredUP app. This sneak peek at one of the line’s upcoming pieces came from Wilde’s Conscious Commerce Instagram account at @consciousco:

ThredUP is an online consignment shop that allows you to purchase from on-trend, lightly used clothing. You can also send in worn goods that you might donate or throw away otherwise. So, considering Wilde’s mission — to help end the “fashion waste crisis,” as she told the Huffington Post — the partnership was a perfect match.
“We’re in the midst of a fashion waste crisis, and buying secondhand can make a real difference,” Wilde said in an exclusive interview with the publication. “I’ve always loved vintage and I’m proud to wear used clothes, so I was drawn to thredUP’s mission to keep great clothing in use and out of landfills. I hope this collaboration inspires others to embrace secondhand to lighten our collective fashion footprint.”
In 2015, the United States Environmental Protection Agency measured the amount of municipal solid waste (MSW) in landfills — discarded clothing, furniture, carpets, tires, footwear and more. The organization found that in 2015 alone landfills received 10.5 million tons of MSW textiles. And based on research compared to 1960-2015, this number is only continuing to rise.
Wilde believes that if everyone works together, we can take major steps to solve this issue.
“If everyone bought just one used item instead of new this year, it would have a huge collective and positive impact on the planet,” she said in a statement.
And with items this cute available (and for a good cause, too!), shopping used is easier than ever before. Will you be picking something up from the collection?
