The original Gerber baby met the newest Gerber baby

Ann Turner Cook and Lucas Warren were born almost 90 years apart, but they have something very special in common. Cook was chosen as the original “Gerber baby” for the baby food brand back in 1928, and Lucas charted new territory for the company by serving as the first Gerber baby with Down syndrome in 2018.

Recently the pair met each other for the first time, and Gerber shared the super-sweet photo on Instagram. The caption read, “Those iconic Gerber smiles. The original Gerber baby, Ann Turner Cook, meets our Spokesbaby Lucas.”

How cute!

The photoshoot happened thanks to a bit of serendipity, as the Warren family was on vacation near Cook’s home in Florida and asked the company to arrange a meeting, according to Gerber spokesperson Bernadette Tortorella.

Cook’s grandson Chris Colin also shared the photo on Twitter, and it has now been re-tweeted more than 8,000 times.

“My grandmother was the Gerber baby,” he tweeted. “It was a funny bit of trivia, never made her rich or got us free strained peas or anything. But last week she got to meet the company’s newest spokesbaby, named Lucas. Pretty pretttty cute.”

Cook was chosen on the basis of a charcoal sketched portrait of her at five months old that was submitted by her family. It became the company’s official trademark in 1931 and appears on all its food products. (As an adult, Cook went on to become a teacher and then a published author!)

In 2010, Gerber began choosing their spokesbaby via photo submissions called the Gerber Baby Photo Search. In addition to receiving a $50,000 prize, the winner is featured in social media advertising campaigns throughout the year. Lucas beat out more than 140,000 entries to become the official spokesbaby in 2018.

The first ad campaign featuring the happy two-year-old, called “Make Every Little Bit Count,” recently debuted. In it, Lucas enjoys Gerber organic puffs with whole grains.

For Lucas’ parents, getting to see the joy their child brings to others has been extremely gratifying.

“I see all these different families from all over look at my son and just smile, or share their own kid on social media so the world can see them, too, or just to say hi to Lucas,” Jason Warren, Lucas’ father, told the “Today” show. “That’s something I’ll never be able to get over. It’s amazing to see how a little smile brings out the best in everybody.”

Lucas loves to be in front of the cameras, his dad continued. We’re sure that when he grows out of being a Gerber baby, he’ll have a modeling career ahead of him!
