Pair These 6 Healthy Foods With Your Favorite Wine

For some people, a glass of wine is part of life’s greatest pleasure. Whether you’re just getting together for ladies night, or you’re a wine connoisseur who can’t wait to open that bottle of Pinot, nothing completes a wine night more than a array of little bites and appetizers. For those who are health conscious, however, all that cheese and crackers can definitely sabotage your diet.

Just because you’re eating healthy doesn’t mean you have to forego a wine night. After all, wine is an antioxidant that helps fight aging including heart disease. But there are other options when it comes to choosing foods that complement wine as well as a good brie and Merlot. Next time you’re going to pop open a bottle, try accompanying it with one of the seven below foods that not only go great with your drink, but are healthy to boot.

1. Dark Chocolate

Chocolate and wine can be enjoyed on more than just a romantic night. Pair a red with 70 percent dark chocolate or more, and you’ll be getting a double boost of antioxidants. If you prefer savory snacks, you can even opt for a salted, darker variety, which can help satisfy that craving without overloading on sodium.

2. Hummus

Dip some carrots or mini pitas into some hummus for a fiber-filled, low-fat snack that pairs well with Sauvignon Blanc, Rose, and Pinot Noirs. Drizzle your hummus with some olive oil and herbs if you’re looking to get a little fancy and kick up the classiness.

3. Quinoa Salad

If you’re craving a more hearty dish, try pairing a quinoa and vegetable salad with a Sauvignon Blanc or a fruity red. Keep your salad simple with some mushrooms and Parmesan or some lemon and asparagus, and you’ll have a guilt-free, protein-filled dish that meshes well with a glass of vino.

4. Popcorn

When popped at home, popcorn is actually a healthy, low-calorie snack that is filled with whole grains and fiber. Spruce up your popcorn with some herbs or cinnamon, and pair it with your favorite bottle for a surprisingly satisfying combo. Now you have an excuse to drink some wine at movie night!

5. Roasted Vegetables

Take your veggies a step further by throwing options like carrots, cauliflower, and zucchini on the grill or in the oven. These vitamin-filled vegetables work well with dry wines, but will keep you satisfied without feeling weighed down.

6. Soft-Boiled Eggs

Eggs aren’t just for breakfast. Get in a gourmet source of protein with a savory soft-boiled egg. Serve with herbs or avocado and pair with a dry or bubbly white, and you’ll be glad to get in your fill of your B vitamins while enjoying your night.
