When babies are born prematurely, they face a number of challenges, big and small. One common problem that you might not even realize is some preemies are too delicate to wear traditional diapers. Now Pampers has introduced a special flat diaper, designed to “protect the needs of preemies whose skin is too delicate to wear a traditional diaper or require an alternative diapering solution while in the NICU,” according to a press release from the company.

The new diapers lay flat under the baby and maximize skin exposure for medical treatments, according to These flat diapers have no elastic, fragrance or tape, which may be irritating to the sensitive skin of a premature infant.

When designing their diapers, Pampers partnered with pediatricians, pediatric dermatologists and safety experts to ensure the materials that they use are safe for babies, including premature infants.

Pampers partnered with the March of Dimes, a foundation which helps families of babies born prematurely, and in honor of Prematurity Awareness Month this November, will donate a box of Pampers NICU Flat Diapers to every NICU in the nation. Pampers will also donate up to $300,000 to the March of Dimes this month.

“For more than 40 years, Pampers has been proud to be in the corner of all NICU nurses and preemie babies, providing innovative solutions in support of their unique needs,” said Erica Bardeau, brand manager for North America Baby Care for Procter & Gamble. “In 2002, we were the first major diaper manufacturer to create a diaper for premature babies. Since then, we have developed numerous innovations, including diapers ranging from size P1 to P3 for micro-preemies, to care for all babies, even the littlest fighters.”

According to the March of Dimes, an estimated 15 million babies around the world are born premature each year and more than one million of them do not survive. The United States has one of the highest rates of preterm birth of any industrialized nation.
