Paris is installing sparkling water fountains all around the city

The city of Paris is full of history, art and… sparkling water? Yep, the French city is making moves to install sparkling water drinking fountains in 20 different locations because if you’ve got the choice of sparkling or still—sparking sounds more exciting, right? I mean sparkling seems fitting with the “city of light” theme, after all!

According to CityLab, Paris already has eight of these sparkling water fountains readily available. But they’re expanding their initiative to keep the French hydrated and looking to grow to a total of 20 fountains in 2018.

In 2010, this project began as a way to help the people of Paris drink more water.

“People often told me that they were ready to drink tap water if it was carbonated,” Anne le Strat, head of the Paris water board, reportedly told 20 Minutes magazine when the first fountain was installed in 2010. “Now they they’ve got no excuse not to.”

To kick off the expansion, a new fountain was just installed at the Square Eugene Varlin in the city’s 10th arrondissement.

Not only will these fountains be even more accessible come 2018, but they’ll also remain free of charge. It’s as simple as walking over and refilling your water bottle. This will hopefully keep folks hydrated and reduce the amount of plastic waste in the process.

The water stays perfectly chilled at 44 degrees Fahrenheit, according to Conde Nast Traveler. So you’ll never have to worry about getting less than chilled seltzer.

These sparkling fountains (or fontaine pétillante, as they’re called locally) aren’t the only fountains in and around the city however. There are also historic water fountains dating back over 100 years and many other public drinking fountains all over the city. You can check out a map of them—just in case you happen to find yourself parched in Paris in the near future.

Plenty of unsuspecting tourists have stumbled upon one of the eight existing fountains, according to Twitter. What a pleasant surprise, indeed!

Some people can hardly contain their excitement over something other than still water.

These runners certainly were in for a treat.

Then there are those who live in the city and get to take advantage of this cool feature all of the time.

Thirsty to try these fountains out for yourself? A trip to Paris will quench your thirst and satisfy your curiosity, so if you didn’t already have your summer travel plans in order—well, now you do!
