Pink-Fleshed ‘Rosé’ Pineapples Are Coming! And 4 Other Fruit Hybrids To Try

Adobe

Pineapple is a perfect fruit. Sweet, tart, and juicy, it tastes like summer in a spoon. (And it makes for great drinks too!)

But wouldn’t you like pineapple a little bit better if it was pink instead of yellow?

I know I would. Well, good news, everyone: Popular pineapple purveyor Del Monte Fresh Produce may finally be releasing pink-fleshed pineapple in the near future. The company has been working on the pink pineapple creation since 2005. It’s being called a “Rosé” pineapple, and something tells me it’s going to be a must at everything from baby showers to weddings to boozy brunches. The FDA has just given its stamp of approval to the pink pineapple, so Del Monte will be moving forward with plans to sell the new fruit.

There’s not much difference to the pink-fleshed pineapple apart from its color. Del Monte genetically modified regular old yellow-fleshed pineapple using Lycopene in order to change its pigmentation in a process that the FDA has now deemed safe (but if you’re hesitant about eating GMO foods, you should know that going in).

“Lycopene is the pigment that makes tomatoes red and watermelons pink, so it is commonly and safely consumed,” the FDA said.

Here are some other fun and funky fruits you might not know about:

1. The Grapple

Yep, a grape-flavored apple. Because, why the heck not? It is purported to “crunch like an apple, taste like a grape.” Sounds good to me!

2. The Tayberry

The Tayberry is what happens when you cross a raspberry with a blackberry. It’s supposed to make for excellent jams. I bet a warm English muffin with Tayberry jam would be heavenly.

3. The Pluot

What if a plum and an apricot got married and had babies? You guessed it. A pluot (also known as a plumcot). Check out a recipe for Blackberry Pluot Fruit Pie from Fearless Fresh.

4. The Blood Lime

Do you enjoy tart flavors? If so, the blood lime (a hybrid of the red finger lime and the Ellendale Mandarin) is for you. Here is a recipe for Blood Lime Marmalade from Souvlaki for the Soul.
