Want a movie theater experience without having to actually put on real clothes to go to a packed show? Poptheatr might be the gadget you never knew you needed. While it does look a bit absurd, it’s not a bad option for people who prefer to watch content on their tablet or phone but are tired of having to hold those devices up the whole time.
So what is Poptheatr? It’s basically a black silo that you stick over your head which blocks out light, disturbances, noise and provides the privacy that watching a movie in your living room can’t. With it, your phone or tablet is securely held about 15 inches away from your face, which the company says “is the best viewing distance to make the screen look its best and making sure you are comfortable after long exposure.”
As of today, the Kickstarter page to make the product a reality has raised more than $13,000 of its $40,000 goal, with help from more than 100 backers. The fundraiser ends on Feb. 17 and the device will only be produced and sent to backers if the makers reach their goal amount.
“Poptheatr is your own private theater that provides you with a comfortable, personal viewing experience when watching on your mobile device,” reads its Kickstarter campaign. “No longer will you face distractions and constant discomfort when you could be enjoying your movie or show to the fullest extent.”
The device comes with a dual driver speaker which hooks into any mobile device and promises to provide immersive, high-quality sound, while also keeping the phone/tablet charged. Other perks of the Poptheatr include a Bluetooth remote control and a lightweight, breathable material so you’re not suffocating while watching your shows.
Plus it’s collapsible for those times when you want to use it outside of your home and only takes a few minutes to set up. However, I’m not sure if I’d venture in public with that thing over my head.

For those not convinced that this is something that makes a big difference when it comes to watching a movie or show with no distractions, the company cites that not having to use headphones is a major plus. I will say I hate when mine get tangled, which tends to happen every time I need them.
Moreover, it states that the personal theater is more comfortable than a VR headset, provides a more intimate experience than a mobile projector and is more practical than the tablet bed stands that you can only use while on a bed.
If you take part in the Kickstarter campaign, you can get a Poptheatr now for $54 (not including shipping) with an estimated delivery date of July 2018. The California-based manufacturers of Poptheatr say it will retail for $119.
