Prince William gives J.K. Rowling the Royal Companion of Honour award
J.K. Rowling has a new accolade to add to her overflowing bookshelf. At a ceremony in Buckingham Palace on Tuesday, Prince William bestowed the Royal Companion of Honour award on the bestselling author. While Prince Harry and his engagement to Meghan Markle has dominated news lately, Prince William stepped back in the spotlight to present this award.
Rowling received the prestigious award for her services to literature and philanthropy. The Harry Potter author expressed how honored she was to receive the distinction. Rowling said in a statement shared on Twitter that, “to be included in the distinguished and diversely talented company of the other Companions of Honour, especially as a female writer, is a particular privilege.”

Order of the Companions of Honor
George V established the Order of the Companions of Honour in 1917. The Queen names the new members. At any one time, there are only 65 people with the title Royal Companion of Honour. Some of the current members include artist David Hockney, “Downtown Abbey” actress Dame Maggie Smith, scientist Stephen Hawking and human rights activist Desmond Tutu. Rowling is in good company.
The prolific author definitely deserves the honor. Rowling’s beloved Harry Potter series has sold more than 450 million copies and has been translated into 80 languages. Her latest, “Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them,” will bring five more films to eager fans.
When it comes to philanthropy, Rowling is just as generous. In 2000, she established the Volant Trust to support causes she is passionate about. For example, the trust primarily helps fund charities and projects based in Scotland. Through them, they assist women and children at risk.
It’s not the first royal award Rowling has received. In fact, Prince Charles bestowed upon her the title of Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2001. She also has a French Legion of Honour prize and a Hans Christian Andersen Award.
