‘The Princess Bride’ Fans Won’t Want To Miss Its Return To The Big Screen

It’s hard to believe that three decades have passed since “The Princess Bride” was released, but the 1987 movie indeed turns 30 this year. In honor of this milestone anniversary, the classic film is returning to theaters for two days only: Sunday, Oct. 15 and Wednesday, Oct. 18.

It will show in 700 theaters across the country and will also include a short film by director Rob Reiner, who will discuss the movie and its cultural impact.

“The Princess Bride” stars a young Robin Wright alongside Cary Elwes and Mandy Patinkin. Based upon a book by the same name by author William Goldman, it tells the story of a beautiful young woman and her quest to reunite with her one true love. The film has only gained in popularity in the 30 years since its original release, but it actually almost wasn’t made in the first place.

According to Forbes, 20th Century Fox paid Goldman $500,000 for the film rights in 1973, but the project never materialized. It bounced around Hollywood over the next 10 years until Reiner finally secured funding from producer Norman Lear to make the now-iconic film.

“The Princess Bride” was somewhat of a career-launching film for all three of its leads. Wright went on to star in the Oscar-winning “Forrest Gump,” and more recently, the Emmy Award-winning Netflix series “House of Cards” and “Wonder Woman,”

Elwes is known for his work in films such as “Robinhood: Men In Tights” and “Liar Liar.” Patinkin already had a number of TV and movie credits under his belt but has since gone on to even greater success with roles in the critically-acclaimed “Homeland” and “Criminal Minds.”

As for whether fans should get their hopes up for a sequel, at least one cast member says she’s not so sure that’s in the cards. “I think they [the team behind ‘The Princess Bride’] entertained the idea for a minute,” Wright told E! News.  “We thought, ‘Don’t ruin it. Please don’t ruin it.'”
