Princess Diana’s Getting Her Own Holiday, 20 Years After Her Death

2017 marks the 20th anniversary of Princess Diana’s tragic death, and there are events to remember her legacy going on all throughout the year.

A British organization set up in her honor in 1999 called the Diana Award will be honoring her memory all year long.

The Diana Award is a charity with a mission to “foster, develop and inspire positive change in the lives of young people,” according to the organization’s website. So, the events this year will be centered around the princess’ charity work and good deeds.

The organization’s even decided to devote an entire day, which will be called National Kindness Day, to remembering the princess. The day will take place in March, with the exact date still to be determined.

“What’s 2017 all about? It’s about celebrating the legacy of Princess Diana, 20 years on. Diana, Princess of Wales was known worldwide for her values of compassion, her values of kindness and her values of service to others,” Tessy Ojo, chief executive of the Diana Awards, told Express.

The publication reports that Diana’s brother, Earl Spencer, will take part in some of the events. He will host an exhibition at the family’s home and more to honor his sister’s legacy. Prince William and Prince Harry haven’t confirmed how they’ll be involved, but they are expected to participate as well.

Apparently, 20 years later, the sons have been more vocal about losing their mother. Prince William recently told a 12-year-old boy at a public event that he went though an “angry period” after his mother’s death.

“He told my son that, when his mum died, he was 15 at the time, and he was very angry and found it very difficult to talk about it,” Lorna Ireland, the boy’s mother told a royal correspondent.

Remembering Princess Diana through honoring her good deeds seems to be the best way to spend 2017, if you ask me.
