You can now take a rage yoga class that lets you swear and drink

When you think of yoga classes, you tend to picture a room of serene, zenned-out people stretched out on their mats. Of course, such an image can be intimidating, especially if you are more “Type A” and less “Type Ohm.”

Well, here is some good news: A new breed of yoga classes is embracing those of us who might not want to check our intensity at the door of our wellness practice. “Rage Yoga” is popping up in locations across North America (in Texas and Canada, for starters).

In this yoga class, you don’t have to breathe it all in and love it all out. Instead, you are encouraged to curse, scream, yell and do whatever else you need to do to move that anger and stress out of your body.

Here’s an image from Rage Yoga’s Instagram page showing how it might look when someone does rage yoga:

“Rage Yoga is a practice that involves breathing, stretching, Moodra, yoga postures and a lot of bad humor,” Ashley Duzich, a Rage Yoga teacher, told Tulsa, Oklahoma’s KOTV News on 6.  “It allows you to have a safe space to let go of your anger and frustration and rage in a healthy way and then also wash it all away with some ice-cold beer!”

Oh, did we mention the beer part? Yep, at some of these yoga classes, you get to enjoy a cold brew while you are sweating and swearing. Instead of fueling up with water during your yoga session, you can enjoy a refreshing craft beer instead.

That’s because Duzich’s Rage Yoga series takes place at Brash Brewery, a Houston, Texas brewery known for its love for heavy metal — and now, for its heavy metal spin on yoga.

Rage Yoga may sound like a gimmick, but it is an actual fitness program that requires certification, as seen in the Instagram post below.

The practice encourages students to release their stress while building muscles and gaining inner strength. You might think of it like other trademarked fitness regimens, such as Zumba, which take existing fitness principles and create a certain attitude and class structure around them to make exercising more fun and fabulous.

Lindsay Istace, Rage Yoga’s founder, says in a promotional video that this type of yoga isn’t for everyone. But there are those who do find it easier to get centered in the midst of loud music and war cries rather than the traditional yoga studio environment.

She says it’s not just about swearing while doing yoga, although that definitely happens — it’s about developing strength and resilience while working through what’s holding you back.

Here’s the video, which is available from Lindsay Istace’s YouTube account:

“My practice gave me a strong body-mind connection and a new appreciation for my body,” Istace said on the Rage Yoga website. “I learned how to slow my mind, feel good in my body and built some decent pipes while I was at it. It helped me overcome addiction and weather a lot of personal obstacles.”

Think this sounds more up your alley than regular yoga? You can take Rage Yoga classes online if you don’t yet live near a studio which offers this niche program.
