Reebok is using COVID-19 nurses to model its Wonder Woman collection

True heroes don’t have superpowers. They are ordinary people who do extraordinary things to help others in the world.

Reebok recently released a line of shoes and apparel inspired by the upcoming movie, “Wonder Woman 1984,” and the company embraced that idea in promoting it. When deciding on ways to promote the Reebok X Wonder Woman 1984 collection, its marketing department highlighted health care workers who are fighting COVID-19.

A new promotional video from Reebok features six incredible women from Boston who have helped treat countless patients suffering from the coronavirus. Included in the video are emergency room nurses Kathryn D’Innocenzo and Solange Rosa, registered nurses Cassie May and Suki Stiles and nurse practitioners Taylor Meyer and Vilma Pachecho.

A hospital network that employs some of the women featured proudly shared on Facebook that four of its nurses — Meyer, Pacheco, Rosa and Stiles — were in the campaign.

″These nurses are on the frontlines fighting the first global pandemic of the century day in and day out by risking their lives to save others,″ Caroline Machen, vice president of global marketing at Reebok, said in a statement shared with Shape Magazine about the campaign. ″While they might not see themselves as real-life wonder women, we do.”

The sneaker giant Tweeted a promo featuring the women on Sept. 10, calling pandemic frontline workers, “the real-life superheroes of our time.”

In addition to the group video of these six women wearing some of the pieces from the collection, each of the health care workers was profiled talking about the work they’ve done and how their lives have been during the pandemic.

“I do think we’re heroes,” said Pacheco. “Hero means you sacrifice something. If it’s your life, if it’s your health or if it’s small things. What makes these women heroes is that despite being afraid and having real fear that they still showed up to work, that they still try their hardest, that they still sacrifice for others. That, to me, is unbelievably inspiring.”

Some of the women had a harder time seeing themselves as heroes.

“When I decided to become a nurse I realized I’d have to be taking care of very sick people and I realized I’d be getting exposed and that’s my job to be there for people,” said D’Innocenzo. “It’s funny and it’s hard to hear people call me a Wonder Woman. I got to work and I take care of my kids because I love them, so it doesn’t feel like an obligation. It just feels like something I enjoy and it’s a part of my life and it’s what makes me me.”

As for “Wonder Woman 1984,” the highly anticipated movie is now slated to premiere in theaters on Dec. 25, 2020 following a number of delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
