Robin Williams’ daughter donated to homeless shelters in honor of his birthday

Award-winning actor and comedian Robin Williams brought laughter and smiles to the world in so many ways. From his early days as Mork from Ork to his iconic portrayals of Mrs. Doubtfire and Genie, Williams had a once-in-a-generation talent to entertain us.

The beloved star took his own life on Aug. 11, 2014, following bouts with mental illness and Lewy body dementia. The world lost one of its greatest performers, but Williams’ family lost a husband, father and friend.

Zelda Williams, the actor’s daughter, has an annual tradition of donating to charitable groups on her father’s birthday, which was July 21. This year was no exception as she took to social media to share her tradition with her followers and her late father’s friends and fans. Of course, given how old her dad would’ve been and his love of laughter, Williams did her good deed with a wink this time.

“Today would’ve been Dad’s 69th birthday, so to honor him (& that glorious number), I will be donating $69.69 to as many local homeless shelters as I can,” she wrote on Twitter. “Join me if you like, but regardless, know I am wishing you all at least one hearty, immature belly laugh on Dad today.”

From there, Williams kept adding to the thread of giving by posting receipts from the causes who received her donations, all of which work to help homeless people. She started with the Los Angeles LGBT Center.

The list kept growing with $69.69 donations to the Union Rescue Mission, PATH, Glide Foundation, San Francisco LGBT Center, The Midnight Mission and other groups.

But, the best part of the birthday celebration was how people from around the world joined in to honor Williams’ life and legacy by making their own donations to worthy causes.

“Your dad brought laughter and joy to so many, including me,” tweeted Marnie Primmer. “Thank you for sharing him with us. I’m grateful I can join you in honoring him today by donating to @pathways_ofhope.”

The giving her gesture inspired moved Williams to reach out and say thank you to everyone the next day.

“Wanted to pop back to say I’ve gotten a ton of these,” she tweeted. “Charities are receiving $69.69 all over the world! The ripples of good you all spread is helping SO MANY! It’s more than just a ‘nice’ gesture… you’ve spread kindness like Dad spread laughter, & I am forever grateful.”
