Why You Should Rock Red Lipstick Every Day (As If You Didn’t Already)

Ladies— stop what you’re doing because you’re going to want to read this. You just got another reason to rock a red lip (as if you needed another one), and this one’s based on science. I know, it seems a little crazy that there’d be a scientific explanation for why we like our red lippies so much, but there is one. So, doesn’t the world make more sense all of a sudden?

According to a study conducted by the research and development team at Chanel and a similar study conducted at the Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania back in 2013, wearing red lipstick can make you appear younger. Apparently, as we age, our skin darkens, but our lips becomes paler. So, makeup for your lips can help give an illusion of a darker lip shade, which implies youth. I knew there was a reason I loved slicking some color on my lips!

There’s also research to back up the theory that red lacquer can make women feel more confident, and I don’t think you need science to tell you that one’s true. You can just feel it, you know?

Check out four reasons why you should be wearing red lipstick more often, because, I mean, it’s pretty hard to argue with science.

1. Increases Confidence

In my personal experience, slathering a little lipstick on makes me feel like I can handle whatever comes my way during the day. And according to Psychologies, they’ve seen this whole lipstick evoking confidence thing in action, so there’s the actual definitive proof, in case you needed it.

2. Make You Look Younger

The study I mentioned earlier proved that “the application of lipstick not only darkens the lips but should also increase red-green contrast of the lips, which we found to be higher in younger faces.” I don’t know about you, but I’m ok with preserving my youth through the application of rouge.

3. Helps You Love Yourself

With more confidence comes more body positivity. According to InStyle, CoverGirl teamed with Harvard to study the effects of lipstick on women. They found that “people who wear lipstick more often post twice as many selfies per week than those who go au naturel,” according to the magazine. More selfies means more self-love, and you can never have too much of that.

4. Makes Any Look A Power Look

When you don’t feel like getting dressed let alone putting on makeup, be sure to still add some color to those lips. It can make a simple t-shirt and jeans seem like a killer outfit, and therefore, improve your mood even though you really didn’t feel like getting out of bed. Because we’ve all been there.

A little lipstick goes a long way. And now, you’ve got the science to prove it. So, what are you waiting for? Cover those lips in red, like, now. There’s really no reason not to.
