5 recipes perfect for a royal wedding watch party
Aside from the dress, venue and the rest of the glitz and glamour that comes with a royal wedding, one other thing we all want to know is — what’s on the menu?!
From main dishes to sides, desserts and, of course, drinks, the food served at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle has piqued the curiosity of my taste buds. While Kensington Palace hasn’t released the wedding menu for all of us to see, a look at the wedding menu of Prince William and Kate Middleton and knowing Harry and Megan’s favorite foods might just give us an idea.
All we know so far for the latest royal wedding is what flavor the cake will be — and it is anything but ordinary! The official website of U.K.’s Royal Family confirms the cake will be flavored with lemon and elderflower and will be covered with buttercream. Yum!

While your odds of getting to taste the cake — or the rest of the menu for that matter — are pretty slim, there are plenty of royal wedding-inspired recipes you can make at home to enjoy while watching the nuptials on TV.
From classic British appetizers, to those that cater to Markle’s American roots and her love of all things rosé and, of course, that interesting cake, here’s how you can eat like the royal couple — even without that coveted invite.
Smoked Salmon On Irish Soda Bread With Chive Butter
Let’s start the party a bit fancy, shall we? Smoked Salmon on Irish Soda Bread is a traditional English appetizer, but is easy enough for us non-royal chefs to make. With a recipe courtesy of the Food Network’s Hearty Boys, total cook time is around two hours, so start this one first and move on to the rest of the menu.
Hogs In A Blanket
If you’re looking to honor Markle’s American roots with your viewing party snacks, this Hogs in a Blanket recipe from Food and Wine is a bit classier than the version you might be used to, as it uses andouille sausage and chutney.
Not into meat but need another appetizer? (Me either!) How about this Artichoke-and-Spinach Dip with Spiced Pita Chips? It calls for artichokes and spinach, of course, but also white wine and only takes 30 minutes to make.
Frosé
Markle has gone on record as saying she loves rosé, so why not toast to her with this this delicious-looking Frosé (Frozen Rosé) from Bon Appetit. All you’ll need is strawberries, rosé wine, sugar and lemon juice!

The Queen Martini
This cocktail is a bit fancier than the one above, as it includes Amaro Montenegro, which has ties to Italian royalty. The liquor was served during the marriage of the second queen of Italy, Princess Helen of Montenegro, to Italy’s King Victor Emmanuel III, in 1896. The Queen Martini, created by New York mixologist Salvatore Tafuri, also includes gin and dry curacao. The full recipe is below:
THE QUEEN MARTINI
- 1.5 ounces London dry gin
- 1.5 ounces Montenegro
- 1/4 ounce dry curaçao
- 3 dashes aromatic bitters
Elderflower Crunch Cake
While it might not be as fancy as the cake served at the royal wedding, you can make your own elderflower cake pretty easily. This recipe from BBC Good Food only takes about 20 minutes of prep time and includes elderflower cordial, which you can buy on Amazon. You could also frost the cake and use some fresh strawberries and blueberries to make it look like the Union Jack, the national flag of the United Kingdom.
If you’re not into elderflower but are loving the idea of a flag cake, there’s a Union Jack cake recipe on AllRecipes that uses chocolate and coffee.
When To Watch
Americans can watch the wedding itself on multiple channels on May 19, including CBS, NBC and PBS, with coverage starting at about 4 a.m. Eastern on all networks. The actual wedding, at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor, is scheduled for 12 p.m. local time, which means it should start at about 7 a.m. Eastern.
So, yes, some of these recipes might be a bit much for breakfast, but, hey, it’s a celebration!
If you’re looking for something more, you know, morning-friendly, check out the collection of breakfast recipes from the Great British Chefs. You’ll find some British dishes that sound delicious, like spiced roast plum and almond French toast or perfect banana pancakes. And just so you know, the newest royal couple does love bananas!
