Salted caramel Rice Krispie treats are a sweet, salty twist on a classic
Rice Krispies are an essential childhood treat. And while there’s no need to mess with the perfection of the original recipe, if you want to elevate your Krispies to tempt adult palettes, here’s a sweet twist: Salted Caramel Rice Krispie Treats!
These Rice Krispie bars will taste like they came straight from the bakery, but they don’t require anything fancy. Just your usual Rice Krispie ingredients (butter, marshmallows, Rice Krispie cereal) along with salt and baking caramels.

Jill uses Kraft Caramels, which you can buy prewrapped and in mini chunks on Amazon or at your local grocery store. Just as using mini-marshmallows for your Rice Krispie treats makes melting a cinch, using these mini-caramels also simplifies the ooey-gooey prep stage.
As for the salty bit, you can use coarse sea salt, like these iconic Maldon Sea Salt Flakes. It’s a bit pricier than regular table salt, but if you buy it on Amazon, you may find it cheaper than at the store. It’s a subtle but powerful way to add sophistication to any of your recipes, especially when you’re baking and you really want the saltiness to pop against the sweet flavors of the dessert.
If you don’t want to mix the caramel bits into your Krispies, you can also just spread them on top, a la “dulce de leche,” simply by using a caramel ice cream topping. See how Kellogg’s chefs do it here. They also add pecans on top for a bit of crunch and added flavor.
Looking for other ways to dress up your Rice Krispie treats? Try these yummy fruit and Rice Krispie kabobs, which are just perfect for a backyard barbeque or birthday pool party. Find the full recipe on Kellogg’s here.
If you want to make Rice Krispies to celebrate Pride Month, may we recommend making your treats in rainbow-colored tiers? This example from the Kellogg’s Rice Krispies website is in shades of red, black, blue and yellow in honor of the Olympics Games, but you can easily adapt the food coloring choices in your Krispie treats to be in rainbow hues like the Pride Flag.
