Another 142 Sears And Kmart Stores Are Closing—Here’s The Full List

Sears was once the largest retailer in the U.S., but the company filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Oct. 15 and announced plans to close a total of 142 Sears and Kmart stores by the end of the year. According to Business Insider, the 125-year-old retailer had nearly 2,000 stores as recently as 2013, but now, the company only operates 687 Sears and Kmart stores.

CNN reported that Sears has been heading for financial downfall over the past few years as the company took on more and more debt. In fact, 2010 was the last year the retailer saw a profit, and in the meantime, it has lost $11.7 billion. The Wall Street Journal reported Sears now owes lenders and bondholders more than $5 billion; the interest rates alone add up to $440 million a year. Sears must file a chapter 11 reorganization plan by Feb. 18, 2019, and the company hopes the reorganization, which could focus on the 300 most profitable stores, will pull them out of bankruptcy by May 2019.

The retailer currently employs about 68,000 people, and obviously, this is terrible news for anyone who works at Sears or Kmart. The company has shuttered several hundred stores over the past few years, and the 142 stores that are closing are in addition to the 46 stores that were already expected to close by the end of November.

Sears and Kmart are joining the likes of Toys R Us, JCPenney and other retailers that have been forced to close stores, or even go out of business in recent years.
