‘Sesame Street’ will join CNN town hall this weekend to help speak out against racism

Racism has no place on any street — including Sesame Street. That’s the message the beloved children’s show shared on social media this week in the wake of the death of George Floyd and nationwide protests.

“Sesame Street was built on diversity, inclusion, and, especially, kindness,” reads a statement. “Today and every day we stand together with our Black colleagues, partners, collaborators and the entire Black community. We stand with our friends around the globe to speak out against racism, to promote understanding, and to create a world that is smarter, stronger, and kinder.”

Now, Sesame Street is taking its message even further, announcing a plan to hold a virtual town hall on CNN for parents and kids to help them understand what is happening in the nation right now. CNN says the town hall will focus on racism, the nationwide protests, embracing diversity and how we can be more empathetic and understanding.

The 60-minute special “Coming Together: Standing Up to Racism” will air on CNN this Saturday, June 6 at 10 a.m. ET. It will stream live on CNN.com and on CNN’s apps, without requiring a cable log-in.

The town hall will be co-moderated by Big Bird and CNN’s Van Jones and Erica Hill. “Sesame Street” characters including Elmo, Abby Cadabby and Rosita will also join them, as will experts to help answer questions submitted by families. You can submit questions by visiting CNN’s website.

The Sesame Street gang previously held a CNN Town Hall on COVID-19 in April, where Big Bird, Hill, CNN chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta and other Sesame Street characters and experts discussed the novel coronavirus.

Issues like education, anxiety, screen time and playdates were discussed to help children understand the virus and why they aren’t allowed to go to school or hang out with friends.
