You Can Buy Solid Shampoo That Eliminates Plastic Packaging
Currently 80 percent of plastic bottles end up in land fills, despite the fact that they are recyclable. Knowing this, a New Zealand-based company called Ethique decided to #giveupthebottle—and the results are amazing.
The idea came when creator Brianne West began to question why we are spending so much money on shampoos that contain about 80 percent water and conditioner, which can be up to 95 percent water. With Americans spending $1.4 billion annually on shampoo, water is not the only thing going to waste.
Ethique removes the water from products like shampoo, conditioner, body wash and laundry detergent, and instead produces them in dry-bar form. That eliminates the need for plastic packaging and saves about a liter of water per bar. The company uses sustainably produced ingredients like mandarin oranges, pomegranates, cinnamon and ginger, so the products smell great, too.
But, the best part is that the dry shampoo bars last about five times longer than a bottle of shampoo! The conditioning bar lasts up to 12 months, as long as the product is kept dry when not in use. A single bar of conditioner contains the same amount of product as five bottles of liquid conditioner. That means you can save money and the environment at the same time!

Ethique also offers customized shampoo. You choose not only the color and scent of your bar, but also the results you are looking for (absorb excess oil, revitalize hair, etc.). They then create a bar unique to your needs.

Of course, Ethique isn’t the only company doing great things for the environment. Companies such as Lush Cosmetics and Obia Naturals are also getting in on the dry bar game. Check out some of those affordable products below.
