The Original PlayStation Is Being Revived In Miniature Form

It will be available just in time for Christmas!

If you were a fan of PlayStation back in the ’90s, you’ll soon have a chance to relive your gaming glory days. That’s because Sony is launching a miniature version of the original 1994 PlayStation console.

The original PlayStation was the first console to sell 100 million units worldwide. The updated version of the throwback classic is called PlayStation Classic and will be about 45 percent smaller than the original. It comes with two replica controllers and 20 pre-loaded games, including “Final Fantasy VII,” “Jumping Flash,” “Ridge Racer Type 4,” “Tekken 3” and “Wild Arms.” It will also come with an HDMI cable to connect to a TV as well as a USB cable and a virtual memory card.  The PlayStation Classic will be priced at $99.99 and available as of Dec. 3, just in time to delight every gamer on your holiday shopping list.

Sony is not the first video game company to take advantage of a nostalgia-obsessed customer base. In 2016, Nintendo released the NES Classic, a smaller “reboot” of their original Nintendo Entertainment System, which first debuted in the 1980s. In 2017, they released the Super Nintendo Classic Edition.

Sega also got in on the throwback fun with the release of the Sega Mega Drive Classic Game Console, which is loaded with 90 classic Sega games as well as a handheld console called the Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Retro Games Handheld.

Sony is hoping the PlayStation Classic will prove to be a hit with both those who remember the original console from the ’90s as well as a whole new generation of fans.

“Long-time fans will appreciate the nostalgia that comes with rediscovering the games they know and love, while gamers who might be new to the platform can enjoy the groundbreaking PlayStation console experience that started it all,” reads the company’s press release.
