‘The Sound of Music’ cast reunites to wear face masks inspired by movie

The Oscar-winning film “The Sound of Music” has inspired generations of fans since its release in 1965. Trying to pick a favorite scene from that movie is like choosing a favorite child. And, with seven children featured in the iconic musical, that could be a tough call.

You may recall one scene when our favorite singing governess Maria (portrayed brilliantly by Dame Julie Andrews) rips down her bedroom drapes to make play clothes for her charges, the Von Trapp children.

Fast forward to 2020 and that curtain fabric that inspired Maria has once again inspired another designer. Debbie Turner, who played Marta Von Trapp in the 1965 movie, saw the fabric of her youth in a more modern way and decided to try her hand at creating something: face masks!

Then, she invited along the rest of the Von Trapp kids to show off a few of their favorite things. Just like the old days, the now grown-up kids are sporting that recognizable green pattern with pride.

“Film Von Trapps wearing curtain masks. Our family wears masks, what about yours? #WearAMask#WearAMaskSaveALife #thesoundofmusic,” Kym Karath, 62, tweeted. She played the youngest Von Trapp, Gretl, in the movie.

The photo included all five surviving actors who portrayed the Von Trapp children in “The Sound of Music.” In attendance were Angela Cartwright (Brigitta), Karath (Gretl), Turner (Marta), Duane Chase (Kurt), and Nicholas Hammond (Friedrich).

Sadly, actress Heather Menzies (Louisa) died in December 2017 and Charmian Carr (Liesl) passed away in September 2016.

Fans of “The Sound of Music” who are wondering where they can snag one of these masks will be happy to know Turner is selling them on her website Debbie Turner Originals.

Currently, Turner has face masks in various sizes from child to large. She even modeled a couple of them, one for adults and then one for children, which she showcased in a humorous way: using a photo of herself as Marta wearing a mask!

Turner is making the face masks by hand and they are selling quickly! They’re limited edition, made from a similar fabric to the one featured in the movie. You can buy the large adult size for $29.99, the medium adult size for $24.99 and the child size for $19.99. The site currently says she is taking pre-orders for the next batch of large masks.

“Due to overwhelming demand, my von Trapp fingers are sewing as fast as they can,” she shared on her website. “Please be patient and your order will go out as soon as possible.”

What a great message from the younger members of the Von Trapp family! Will you buy one of Turner’s face masks?
