‘Space Jam 2’ with LeBron James is officially happening

Everybody get up! It’s time to slam now.

That’s right, it looks like “Space Jam 2” is officially in the works, and so far the movie is assembling its own Dream Team. Basketball superstar LeBron James will team up with “Black Panther” and “Creed” director Ryan Coogler, who will be producing this time around. And that is before we get into Bugs Bunny, who will play himself in the film.

James’ SpringHill Entertainment Company sent out a tweet showing a locker room with Bugs, James, Coogler and director Terence Nance’s lockers, complete with Tune Squad gear:

As you can tell by the 30,000 retweets, this is a pretty big deal, as rumors of a “Space Jam” followup have been circulating for years as the next logical step for James.

For us kids growing up in the ’90s, the original “Space Jam” from 1996 starring Michael Jordan holds a special place in our hearts for teaming up our favorite athletes and cartoon characters to make us believe we can fly. Or at least dunk a ball with our stretchy arms while clearly getting fouled:

While sources are saying “Space Jam 2” won’t necessarily be a sequel to “Space Jam,” the theme of believing in yourself is something it sounds like James does want in his movie as well.

“The ‘Space Jam’ collaboration is so much more than just me and the Looney Tunes getting together and doing this movie,” James told the Hollywood Reporter. “It’s so much bigger. I’d just love for kids to understand how empowered they can feel and how empowered they can be if they don’t just give up on their dreams.”

James actually has some legit acting chops, and Coogler might be the hottest name in movies right now, so excitement for this project is running high. And maybe Jordan will make a cameo to recapture his on-screen chemistry with Bugs.
