The announcement has some fans shaking in their shock boots. Why? Because the “Last Jedi” is assumed to be in reference to Luke Skywalker. After all, we know that the First Order will not rest until every Jedi has been exterminated.
Not to mention, writer/director Rian Johnson told USA TODAY that Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) will be the “emotional entry point” for this film.
Hence, many people are afraid for what this could mean for Skywalker’s character:
While others see more plot twists:

There are other ideas as well. The folks over at at Quartz had a number of theories as to whom the “Last Jedi” could be in reference to, from Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) to Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) to Finn (John Boyega).
Rey, the star of 2015’s “The Force Awakens,” is another strong contender as the possible “Last Jedi.” In the last installment, Rey (Daisy Ridley) showed amazing ability to use the Force, and it was assumed that she would train to become a Jedi herself.
Here is Ridley’s funny reaction to the announcement of the film’s title:
And Luke Skywalker himself had this to say:
Oh, and here is another interesting point. While the “Last Jedi” sounds singular, remember that Jedi can also be plural. So, the title might not be in reference to just one person, but a group of people.
Whatever the case, we are going to have to wait a long time to find out! “Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi” will not be released until December 15, 2017.
